On July 28, the city ordered the current bottle depot on the corner of 111 Avenue and 93 Street closed because the building is unsafe. The owners of the bottle depot wish to demolish the current building and construct a new expanded facility on the same site. They have acquired the adjacent two properties for this purpose and are making an application to rezone the parcel of land from CNC to DC2 as the current zoning does not allow for bottle depots.

The owners and their architect wish to work with the community to design a facility that will be attractive and safe. They will present their initial concept drawings to the community at a meeting on TBA (check website or email) at the community centre. Come share your thoughts and ideas.

Personally i am very happy this facility is closed.I no longer have to watch people with shopping carts ,etc. going down the street & ripping open my garbage looking for bottles to sell. These same people also tend to be looking for other things or for something to break into. I think if we ever want our neighborhood to be looked at as a desirable place to live we need to raise our image & these people do nothing but down grade it. I would much rather have these people who own this land develop some nice retail or office space that would add to my property value rather than decrease it by attracting people that we really don,t want in this area anyway. There is a bottle depot on 95 st. these people can use so there is no need to have one in our area. Register my vote as a no to changing the zoning. I have put a lot of time & money into increasing my property value & look as have most of my neighbours & we don,t need another bottle depot. Thank you & if there is going to be a meeting on this please let me know when & where so i can attend.

I was also happy to see this facility closed. I agree with Patrick in his view that despite the efforts of concerned citizens to revitalize the area and make it safer for families and seniors, we still need a boost in terms of making the area less desirable for people who do not have a stake in the community. If there is a meeting on this, please let me know also. Thank you.

I'm a new homeowner in the neighbourhood and agree with the previous two posts ... however, I am wondering if there are any updates on this? As far as I can see, there is still a bottle depot on 93 street and 111 av and have only been able to find articles indicating that it was originally approved by the city to move to 95 street and 111 avenue but has since been repealed due to that location's proximity to the neighbourhood elementary school. I have felt very positive about my choice to buy a home in the Alberta Avenue neighbourhood but the bottle depot and the kind of traffic it attracts on my street certainly mars the efforts my neighbours have clearly made to make our area inviting.
