Alberta Avenue Murdered or Missing and Exploited Indigenous Peoples (+) (MMEIP+) Parks Project
The Alberta Avenue Community League is currently in the process of developing four neighbourhood parks into a public space that will honour murdered or missing and exploited Indigenous peoples, many of whom have called our neighbourhood home or disappeared from our neighbourhood. The main park for this project (currently designated by the City as "Alberta Avenue Park 4") is located at the north-west corner of 121 Avenue and 90 Street (across 90 Street from Delton School) with three smaller additional parks to the west of it (officially known by the City as "Alberta Avenue Park 5", "Alberta Avenue Park 7" and "Alberta Avenue Park 8") being transformed to create a processional approach to the main park. The Alberta Avenue Community League initiated a thoughtful journey into naming certain parks as a tribute to MMEIP. kisêwâtisiwin pronounced [ki-se-wât-si-win] was gifted by Elder Elsie Paul in August 2021 during a naming ceremony with Elder Russel Auger. The Cree Word speaks to how one strives to apply the principles of gentle, loving kindness into all areas of life. The MMEIP+ Parks Project is currently being overseen by a committee consisting of both indigenous and non-indigenous voices from within Alberta Avenue as well as Edmonton as a whole.
